SeedSafe

Reimagining seed storage - upgraded with smart and resilient design

The Problem

For millions of smallholder farmers, seed failure doesn't come from lack of effort, it comes from uncertainty. Farmers dry and store seeds, but they don't know when seeds are safe, at risk, or already compromised. That information arrives too late, after planting. SeedSafe is designed to change that.

Seeds lose viability when moisture and temperature cross biological thresholds for too long. Our approach is simple: control moisture, stabilise the environment, and provide early signals before failure occurs. Every component you see here exists to reduce uncertainty, not to add complexity.

Learn How It Works

The Prototype

This is our working SeedSafe prototype. It is not a finished product, it is a functional system designed to test a core idea: can we monitor and control seed storage conditions in a way that actually helps farmers make better decisions?

This prototype demonstrates three critical capabilities: first, that internal humidity can be stabilised despite external conditions; second, that moisture can be actively reduced when thresholds are exceeded; and third, that seed storage conditions can be made visible and understandable to the user.

SeedSafe is not about perfect precision, it is about early warning. By providing farmers with timely signals before irreversible loss occurs, SeedSafe improves planting decisions, reduces seed waste, and increases confidence in seed quality.

What Makes Us Unique

SeedSafe is designed as a complete, farmer-first solution. Unlike conventional systems that address drying, storage, or monitoring in isolation, SeedSafe integrates all three into a single, portable unit built for real-world farming conditions.

Our design is localised for regions like Bihar, combining low-energy mechanisms with language-neutral visual indicators that work across literacy levels. Inspired by familiar rural storage practices, SeedSafe uses simple mechanics, tactile controls, and clear visual cues to ensure intuitive use without training fatigue.

SeedSafe is built to scale. By integrating seamlessly with government seed supply chains and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), it enables trusted distribution and measurable impact - improving seed germination rates, increasing crop yields, and supporting data-driven agricultural planning.

Future Plans and Improvements

1. Deep adoption across Bihar

SeedSafe's first goal is widespread adoption among small and marginal farmers across Bihar. By working closely with Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), state agriculture departments, and government seed distribution programs, SeedSafe aims to become a standard post-harvest seed storage solution.

2. Scaling across India's diverse agro-climatic regions

Once validated across Bihar, SeedSafe will be adapted for use in other high-humidity and climate-sensitive regions across India. Future versions will be tuned to different crop types and regional conditions, enabling deployment nationwide through existing government and cooperative supply chains.

3. Enhanced digital integration for institutions

Future iterations will strengthen optional app-based dashboards for FPOs and agricultural bodies, enabling large-scale monitoring, inventory planning, and early identification of storage risks - while keeping the farmer-facing experience simple and intuitive.

This prototype is a foundation. Future iterations will integrate improved thermal storage and simplified decision-state indicators. Our goal is a system that fits seamlessly into existing agricultural practices while quietly preventing failure, before it happens.
